Provider Credentials: What do the letters behind the clinician's name mean?
Should you even care about all those letters? Are they important? Good questions! Basically, those letters are identifiers to let you know what kind of education, license, and certifications a provider has. Always feel free ask your provider about their education, training, and general background in mental health!
Doctorate-level providers:
*Licensed Psychologists: PhD, PsyD, EdD
Physicians: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
*Note: The specific title of "Psychologist" is protected in the state of Pennsylvannia (and many others), requiring advanced education and training in the field of psychology or a related field.
Master's-level providers:
LPC, LMFT, LCADAC, LICSW, LCSW, ACSW
Others may include:
Psychiatric or Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, Family Nurse Practitioners, Certified Peer Specialists, Social Workers (BA- or BS-level) and Pastoral Counselors.
